Sapphire
Small female Terrier, 8 years, 5.6 kgs
Sapphire is a lovely girl. She likes nothing better than to lie back in your arms so you can gently rub her tummy. Sapphire is deaf and would like the company of another dog. She may have been deaf from birth but can hear whistles and react to vibrations. She is a quiet little girl, and always where you are. She likes to play with other dogs as long as they are friendly. She loves her walks and is good on the lead. She cannot be let off lead as she cannot hear your recall, although we are investigating if there is any way around this.
When Sapphire came to us she was a little growly but a vet visit showed why. She had grass seeds embedded at the back of her jaw that the flesh had grown around. She had those and some teeth removed and she no longer smells like a sewage farm.
Sapphire follows the reactions of her canine friends to suss out what is going on and would love a home with another small dog that was happy to play sometimes and laze around the rest. She is wary of dogs that get in her face though and when her fellow foster dog Zaccy got in her face she chased him away. Sapphire is house trained but does have to be watched in wet weather as she doesn’t like her paws getting wet.
She has a minor allergy which is improving now that we are getting rid of the wandering jew. She makes us laugh as when she first arrived she would sit at the six inch door step and look at it and us and say with her eyes ‘ oh that is much too high for me’ until someone picked her up. She tries the same thing with the settee. But we notice that when we aren’t there to help her she manages to jump up quite easily.
Like a lot of little dogs when she goes out at night for her late night toilet she likes you to go with her.
Sapphire would be fine in a home with older teenagers. Because she is deaf you have to remember not to startle her and to attract her attention as otherwise she gets a fright. For example she sleeps on a bed under the desk during the day. If I want her to move I pull the bed slightly so she knows I am there before I pick her up.
Saphire would benefit from having a doggy companion.
Sapphire is 8 years old and apart from being deaf a healthy girl.
