Tomkins is very cute and gentle when he trusts you. He LOVES to play and can be quite puppyish at times. He has a box of toys and chooses the one he wants you to throw for him and will do that for hours. He is a dog that likes his routine, and after dinner he likes a cuddle on the couch then he puts himself to bed. He likes to have his own safe place to sleep and prefers his cosy crate.

During the day he likes to be in the same room as his foster carer and is happy sleeping on the rug just to be near his foster mum.

Tomkins walks pretty well on the lead but he gets very excited when he sees other dogs out walking and will need ongoing training to help him work on this. He can’t be walked off lead so dog parks aren’t a great option for him; instead street walks are preferred. Tomkins understands the command to sit and will shake your hand; sometimes he even drops will when you ask. He knows his name as well as ‘stay’ and ‘up’. He has almost mastered house training and ideally his new home will have a doggy door.

Tomkins is very protective of his personal space and needs time to build trust with new people which is why he is not good with strangers. You can win him over with treats and walks but it still takes some time. Once he trusts you though he is a loyal little mate who wants to be with you and wants to please you.

Tomkins does not seek out the company of other dogs. He isn’t keen on sharing his food or his space which means we are looking for a home where he will be the only pet which also includes no cats. He loves exploring his yard so his new home will need a secure backyard of a good size and he wouldn’t be suited to living in an apartment or unit. Although Tomkins adores his own people he is not the kind if dog who likes to go out and about. He thrives in his own environment.

Tomkins has had a terrible background and his carer has worked patiently with him to overcome his distrust of people. He will be rehomed with the support of VicDRG to the right adult home who understands he needs not only to be loved, but to have a routine with firmness and consistency.

Tomkins is waiting patiently for his forever family to take him home. If you want an easy dog he is not for you but if you want a rewarding and loyal dog he may be the one.

Please note: we do not rehome interstate or to applicants under 25.

It is our policy not to rehome dogs in the Sunraysia area. Please go to your local pound, or contact your local group. As rescue groups have transported thousands of homeless dogs from Mildura and Sunraysia Pounds in the last decade, we do not intend to send any back there.
