What a gorgeous duo - just like an old married couple. Zac is a big sweetie and once he gets the opportunity to snuggle up with you he will get as close as possible. He will rest his head on your foot or roll over for a tummy rub. Zac loves food so is easy to manage. He is happy to sleep all day knowing you are there. Zac may bark for a short while if you go out, but not persistently - when he hears you coming back, he may bark a greeting! His only fault really is that he is possessive of his bed and can show unhappiness if you disturb him, especially if he is asleep and woken suddenly. Both Zac and Ellie would be very happy to sleep on their human's bed, but will also sleep in their own beds of they are near you.
Ellie is very curious and likes to explore your home and yard. Although she is 10 she has some very puppy like qualities. She is particularly food obsessed and will gobble it up quickly in the hope of eating Zac's too. But she now has learned to eat from a "puzzle bowl" and to sit on command before she gets her food to slow her down, so that Zac can finish his food, although if Ellie tries to help him along, she now knows the command "NOT yours, Ellie".
Ellie doesn't bark when separated but will cry a little. She he is quite vocal and will bark when excited: Ellie is keen to go for walks, play with her kong and follow you around everywhere. She is a sweetie and loves belly rubs too. She likes to be held and cuddled like a baby and will fall asleep in your arms on her tummy or side.
Sadly, both these little guys were outside dogs till they came to us. They are now even using the dog door.
Around new dogs, Ellie is disinterested. Zac on the other hand is a little possessive of his space being ‘invaded’ so needs supervision with new dogs initially but after no more than five minutes he is playing as though he has always been best friends.
In terms of walking, Ellie pulls a little on the lead but isn't very strong whereas Zac is a little slow owing to some arthritis, but has shown excellent progress since commencing a daily dose of 4Cyte, with gentle massages on legs and spine daily, which he adores, rolling onto his back with a smile of satisfaction on his otherwise 'grumpy' little old man face!
Zac is blind in one eye but sees perfectly well with his good one and navigates around confidently. He will need a special person who has the time and patience to love and care for a dog with reduced sight. Ellie has sight in both eyes and has recovered from surgery to ensure she maintains good eye health.
So, to sum up, you, cuddles and food will be their main priorities. They are such sweet little souls and we certainly won’t let them spend another winter outside.
