Ethan

The day Ethan joined our family in 2007 he was a very nervous and anxious boy. He had been in foster care for months after coming from Mildura Pound was suddenly thrust into a new home with a new family. He didn’t leave my side all afternoon and all of that evening. If I was sitting he sat snuggled up to me, trembling the whole time. If I got up he followed me and stuck to my side wherever I went. At bedtime, I persuaded him to settle on his bed in the lounge room. After one last cuddle I told him good night and went to my bedroom. As I turned down the Doona I heard little doggy paws on the floor and felt a breeze as Ethan flew past me and dived under the Doona. There was no way he was going to be separated from me.

It didn’t take long for Ethan to recover his confidence and become a devoted and playful member of our family. His favourite game is chasey and his tail vibrates with excitement when we whisper “I’m gonna get ya”, the signal that a game of chasey is afoot. He’s given us a couple of scares over the years; slicing his ear on the dog door and spraying blood all over the house, lower back injuries that have immobilised him from time to time and ear infections because of his large adorable ears - we clean them out once a week (yuk!) but he still succumbs to infection occasionally. He even went missing on one eventful New Year’s Eve, reacting to fireworks in our area. Thankfully we located him the next morning at a neighbouring house. The thought of being without our beautiful boy was terrifying and depressing. We love him dearly and he brings us so much joy.

As the years pass, we know our time with Ethan is going to run out at some time so we are concentrating on enjoying what time with him. Spending so much more time at home because of restrictions to stop the spread of coronavirus has actually been a blessing. Both of our dogs are much happier and calmer having their people at home with them all day every day. Adopting Ethan from Vic Dog Rescue is one of the best decisions I have ever made, I would recommend it to anyone with room in their home and in their heart for a furry family member.
