Finding Joy Again with Jacky Chan

For several years, we have proudly supported Victorian Dog Rescue (VicDRG) and another rescue organisation by fostering and adopting older dogs in need of loving homes. Caring for senior dogs has become something of a mission for us, and over the years we have usually had two or three furry companions sharing our home and hearts.

Sadly, 2024 was a difficult year for our family, with two beloved members of our aged pack passing away within months of each other — Lenny at 17 years old and Bob at 15. Their loss left a huge void, not only for us but also for Sox, our 16-year-old Poodle, who suddenly found herself alone after years of living in a lively pack environment.

Knowing how much companionship means to dogs, we reached out to VDR and submitted an application to foster or adopt another dog who might be a suitable companion for Sox. We expected perhaps another senior rescue — so it came as quite a surprise when VDR asked whether we would consider adopting Jacky Chan Pegotty, a spirited 15-month-old Jack Russell Terrier!

As it turns out, we could not have hoped for a more perfect match.

Jacky Chan is the sweetest, smartest and most loving boy. He adores the beach, enjoys long walks and seems to recharge every half hour before he is ready for another game of fetch in the backyard or an energetic off-the-leash ball run at the park. Yet despite his boundless enthusiasm, he is equally happy to curl up on the couch for cuddles at the end of the day.

Most importantly, Jack has been incredibly gentle and caring with Sox. He has brought out her playful side and restored a sense of youthfulness in her that we had not seen for some time. His ball obsession has also given all of us many more reasons to stay active and enjoy daily exercise together.

Over the past year, Jacky Chan has settled beautifully into our family life. He attends dog school every Sunday, is a remarkably quick learner and has made plenty of canine and human friends along the way.

We also run a dog-friendly AirBnB from our home, and many guests travel with their own beloved pets. Jacky Chan and Sox warmly welcome every visitor, happily sharing their backyard adventures while also respecting our guests’ space and accommodation. Watching them interact so naturally with other dogs has been a joy.

Bringing such a young, energetic and loving companion into our lives has not only enriched our days but, we truly believe, prolonged Sox’s life as well. For us, now in our 60s, Jack has inspired a more active and youthful outlook that has been wonderful for both our health and wellbeing.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone at Victorian Dog Rescue for the amazing work they do. Jacky Chan has brought immeasurable happiness into our lives, and we look forward to many wonderful years ahead with him. We also know that when the time comes, we will happily work with VicDRG again to foster or adopt another energetic companion in need of a loving home.
