NB: We do not rehome interstate or to applicants under 25. It is our policy not to rehome dogs in the Sunraysia area. As rescue groups have transported thousands of homeless dogs from Mildura and Sunraysia pounds over the last decade, we do not intend to send any back there.

Sam is a great dog and a great communicator. At dinner time, he stands and stares at his food bowl then looks at his carer then back at his bowl. If he wants to go into the back yard, he stands and stares at the door, looks back at his carer then back to the door. (He is house trained, never had an accident). When he thinks it’s time to go for a walk, he gives nudges. If he wants pats, he nudges your hand or drapes himself over you like a blanket. Once on a very hot day his carer waited until it had cooled down. They started down the driveway and Sam stopped, held up his paw and did a little whine – the concrete was too warm for his liking so they went for their walk later. Recently while his carer was on a Zoom work meeting Sam went up for a cuddle and when he didn’t get his cuddle he retreated and had a little sulk. A very clear communicator is our Sam.

When Sam is happy he smiles, he’s got one of those faces. He will bring out his harness and leash for a walk and do a tippy tap happy dance with his front paws. Sometimes when you pat him he sort of purrs. He does need a good walk and he walks quite fast. He’s very good in the car, he just lays down in the back seat. He knows commands sit, stay, shake, go to your bed.

Sam was a reluctant surrender due to the owner’s unforeseen circumstances. Sam doesn’t like to spend a lot of time on his own, he really loves human company. His carer went off to a coffee date and she heard him howl as she was leaving in protest that he wasn’t going. So Sam would suit someone who works from home or is home a lot. He is a strong dog coupled with a bit of a goof ball, so unsteady people are probably not well suited. For most of his life Sam wasn’t on a leash very much and perhaps that is why he is quite leash reactive and will bark at other dogs whilst out walking. We’re working on improving that, but currently he’s not a dog park dog.

His foster carer loves him and wishes she was able to keep him permanently but can’t. Think Sam might be the dog for you? I doubt if you met him you wouldn’t want to keep him. He’s a keeper.

Adults/teenage home only.
