You might remember Astrid Dahlstrom, the Pomeranian puppy who came to us with an untreated fracture that required specialist surgery. We were able to save Astrid’s leg with specialist orthopedic surgery, but her leg did end up significantly shorter than her others, leaving her permanently disabled. She was still a very happy puppy despite this and was adopted to a family who could make adjustments to help her live a full and happy life.
Since being adopted she has been loving life. She enjoys playing with her doggy siblings, destroying all the toys she can get her paws on, and looking out for her human brother.
She recently had her first birthday where she got spoilt with hugs and toys. Her favourite toy from the day is a long fox that she likes to drag around behind her.
Sadly Astrid’s leg deteriorated which resulted in her experiencing pain due to the progressive failure of her lateral ligaments. Every effort was made to try and save her leg, including physiotherapy, supplements and medications. However, her regular vet and the specialist vet who performed the original surgery, both recommended that amputation was the best course of action for Astrid.
The surgery went ahead and Astrid’s leg and shoulder blade were removed. She recovered well from surgery, learning to walk and run within 24 hours. She seems to be even more agile than before, and is back to causing all the same mischief. Amputation has given Astrid a pain free life, and we hope she has many years of running around the yard ahead of her.
At Victorian Dog Rescue, we always try to do what is best for the dog, no matter what the cost. Sometimes we don’t get the desired outcome, but every dog deserves a chance at a pain free life, full of happiness and love, which is what Astrid will have from now on.
