NB: We do not rehome interstate or to applicants under 25. It is our policy not to rehome dogs in the Sunraysia area. As rescue groups have transported thousands of homeless dogs from Mildura and Sunraysia pounds over the last decade, we do not intend to send any back there.

Abbey is a cuddly bundle of puppy joy looking forward to her forever life. This sweetie was dumped at a rural pound with her littermates and sadly left behind as the others were adopted. She was taken in by the kind owner of a local animal sanctuary but proved a bit too enthusiastic with her fellow ducks and lambs, so has now moved to new foster digs.

With the blood of two working breeds running through her veins, Abbey is whip smart, already house trained (as long as she has regular outdoor access) and will sit and wait to be given permission before eating her dinner. She loves to unpack her toy box and throw her things about, and is still in the chewing interesting things phase, but responds well to gentle redirection to her toys. Abbey enjoys car rides, loves splashing in any kind of water, sleeps well through the night in the living room (but likes to sneak a morning cuddle on her people’s bed), and settles well when left alone for short periods. She needs physical and mental exercise to keep her entertained and develop her skills.

While a delightful companion to people she trusts, Abbey had a rough start and currently fears strangers, particularly men. She is not aggressive but will warn people off with a bark or two and occasionally growls if she feels hemmed in. In foster care, however, she has shown that she quickly warms to household people and female visitors and is able to overcome her wariness of men when she is not crowded. 

Abbey loves male dogs and currently enjoys playing with her active foster Labrador. However, she can experience some emotional conflict when she gets overstimulated and with more submissive dogs, so time out and slow introductions are important. Abbey has previously lived well with multiple kittens and cats. She is not good with birds and pocket pets. Left to her own devices outside, Abbey sometimes digs and needs supervision and/or dig-proof fencing to keep her safe. She is feeling a bit overwhelmed in her busy foster suburb and would do well in a quieter environment where she can grow at her own pace.

Abbey needs a dog-savvy home in the suburbs with a female human presence and people who understand that she will need patience, space and confidence building to live her best life. Abbey may do best as a solo dog at first, or with a kind and playful adult dog and could live with dog-tolerant cats with appropriate introductions. She will benefit from structured training and opportunities to stretch her paws and brains, via regular exercise and exploration, puzzles and games. Abbey will need continued work on her leash training and a decent backyard to burn off some energy. She may well become a candidate for agility training once she is more comfortable with new people and places. This smart and loving girl is looking for people willing to give her the time and space she needs to adjust to life’s big changes. She will return this support with cuddles, fun and the rewards of watching her grow into the amazing dog she is destined to be. She is a truly beautiful girl, filled with potential. All our dogs are desexed, C5 vaccinated with intranasal, microchipped, wormed and flea treated. All necessary vet work such as dentals, surgery, eye treatment is also carried out. We are no longer heartworm testing as we have not had one positive test since we began in 2006. If a dog comes to us on heartworm treatment this is continued.
