NB: We do not rehome interstate or to applicants under 25. It is our policy not to rehome dogs in the Sunraysia area. As rescue groups have transported thousands of homeless dogs from Mildura and Sunraysia pounds over the last decade, we do not intend to send any back there.

Benji was one of a pair of dogs who sadly lost their loving owner and had a stressful time left alone without human interaction beyond feeding.   After some time in our care, we have determined that Benji will do best as a solo dog.

A spritely guy, Benji enjoys one or two strolls a day, spending time with his trusted people, and keeping an eye on the comings and goings of the house. He is very cuddly and playful with those he loves, and particularly enjoys twilight on the back step, feeling the breeze and watching the changing light of the sky. Benji is housetrained, although may have the odd accident while getting used to new routines. He sleeps through the night on his own bed and has acquired several basic commands in foster care, including ‘sit’ and ‘go to your bed’. Benji is non-destructive in the home and comfortable being left inside while his people are out and about.

While Benji has love and laughs to give, he is a fearful boy who is reactive with other dogs while out walking, and to humans he doesn’t know and unexpected sounds of the neighbourhood. In the short time we have known him, Benji has shown himself able to learn and to build trust, but he needs slow introductions and patient guidance to get there. He is a fundamentally loving boy, who is sadly held back by his fear. Benji’s new people will have to give him the time and space he needs to develop a bond with them, and access to a safe place where he can decompress while he gains confidence in his new environment. Ongoing rewards-based training, puzzle feeders and engagement games will help Benji build his trust and confidence, which will reduce the behaviours driven by his anxiety. He will return the favour with much affection, and the immeasurable pleasure of helping a fearful dog relax.

Benji will be rehomed in an only dog household with experienced owners. He will do best with adults only or a family with older children respectful of his space. His new family will give Benji regular exercise and mental stimulation, but be okay with the fact that he’s never going to be a dog park or café kind of dog. He would be fine with people who are out for some of the time, provided he has toileting opportunities and inside access. We just know Benji’s person or people are out there. If you think you fit the bill, he would love you to submit an adoption application.

Thank you to Christopher of Christopher Fotobooks for the fantastic photos of Benji.

All our dogs are desexed, C5 vaccinated with intranasal, microchipped, wormed and flea treated. All necessary vet work such as dentals, surgery, eye treatment is also carried out. We are no longer heartworm testing as we have not had one positive test since we began in 2006. If a dog comes to us on heartworm treatment this is continued.
