Doudou (aka Dougie or Douglas) is a quiet gentleman who just wants to share a walk in the park, nap against your leg on the couch (and sometimes watch tv with you), and sleep by your feet.
He’s housetrained and can use a doggy door, but arrived in the habit of holding it and waiting for you to periodically take him outside. If you do, he will find a spot to go and then happily trot back to you to come back inside.
“Walk” is a new word he’s learning, so far you see a slight excited tail wag when it’s used. He enjoys many sniffs through the park, including through patches of long grass, to follow a smell trail. He’s calm when greeting other dogs and then happily moves on. He’s happy to walk ahead so he can sniff without causing you to stop and wait, and is gentle on lead with the periodic look to make sure you are still there. While he will walk next to you most of the time, especially on a fixed length lead, he will want to follow interest smells and leave his mark along the trail.
He’s starting to understand that dog beds are there for him to use as he sees fit, and with encouragement he is learning to play (as yet no interest in dog toys, but can occasionally get a bit of chasey happening for a minute or two). He’d prefer a calm home with a person that is home all the time, but may also suit a home with another dog who can provide support when a person isn’t around. It would be best if he has a home free from small animals (such as birds or rodents).
While not a fan of the rain, he will still walk on wet ground (thought may flash a sad look at you at making him get his feet wet!). He needs reassurance when bathing, but so far is very polite not to shake water all over the place until he’s had some towel drying.
Due to missing teeth, he is on a soft food diet and will need this to continue. He enjoys his food and it’s a good motivator for training. While he won’t beg for whatever his humans are eating and will wait for his bowl to be put down to know it’s his meal time, he is definitely a fan of chicken so will give you big eyes hoping you’ll share if it’s on your plate. If you don’t share, he may curl up and wait for you to be done (or give you a cold shoulder).
He wants to be with you everywhere you go, whether it’s outside in the garden, watching you cook from his spot on the couch, going on a car trip, or curled up under your desk while you work. He is working through some separation anxiety, but is improving each day (he no longer needs a person in line of sight, but will come check where you are if he can’t hear you moving around the room).
He’s an adorable little boy who needs someone to love him with as much love as he readily offers. He is desperate for his human’s approval and is very eager to make sure you are happy with him. He learns boundaries quickly and makes every effort to try follow any rules put in place or to correct any behaviours that he notices makes his human/s unhappy or stressed.

All our dogs are desexed, C5 vaccinated with intranasal, microchipped, wormed and flea treated. All necessary vet work such as dentals, surgery, eye treatment is also carried out. We are no longer heartworm testing as we have not had one positive test since we began in 2006. If a dog comes to us on heartworm treatment this is continued.
