NB: We do not rehome interstate or to applicants under 25. It is our policy not to rehome dogs in the Sunraysia area. As rescue groups have transported thousands of homeless dogs from Mildura and Sunraysia pounds over the last decade, we do not intend to send any back there.

Maxy is a gentle, independent soul with the sweetest heart. While he enjoys affection, he’s happiest when it’s on his terms. He loves meeting new people and happily accepts pats from everyone he meets, although he prefers brief interactions at first. As he gets to know and trust you, his affectionate side shines through, and he’ll actively seek out your company.

Maxy has vision and hearing impairments, so he experiences the world through his incredible sense of smell and gentle touch. Because of this, moving into a new home can be a little overwhelming. He may pace and appear unsettled while he learns his surroundings and builds trust with his new family. With patience, reassurance, and quality one-on-one time, he gradually relaxes and settles beautifully.

Affection with Maxy looks a little different—and it’s incredibly special. He absolutely adores head rubs, gentle full-body massages, and especially having his back and hips rubbed, which often earns you his adorable little “butt dance.” He loves it when you sit on the floor beside him for pats and rubs, and he melts for kisses on the top of his head. He isn’t a dog who enjoys being picked up, sitting on laps, or sharing the couch, but he’ll happily thank you with little kisses when he feels especially loved.

These days Maxy prefers a slower pace of life. He enjoys leisurely walks where he can stop often to investigate all the wonderful smells the world has to offer. A well-fitted harness helps guide him safely, as his vision impairment means he can occasionally bump into obstacles. He also enjoys a few minutes of gentle play each day, particularly a fun game with a soft toy where he’ll bow, give it a playful shake, and let you gently ruffle it over his head before settling in for one of his many daily naps.

Maxy is wonderfully polite with everyone he meets. Dogs, cats, birds, and people are all greeted with quiet respect. He has a particularly soft spot for children and will often stand patiently in front of them, waiting for a gentle pat while taking in all their interesting little smells. He lives happily alongside cats, provided they are calm and won’t swipe at or roughhouse with him. While he doesn’t actively play with other animals, he truly enjoys their company and would likely appreciate a gentle, older companion who is happy simply to share space with him.

Because of his impairments, Maxy relies on his people for guidance rather than traditional obedience commands. He naturally follows your lead and doesn’t need to learn tricks like “sit”—when you stop, he stops. His trust in his person is one of his most endearing qualities.

Maxy does need a little extra support with his toileting routine. He isn’t always confident navigating even small steps and benefits from a flat, easily accessible outdoor area. He tends to toilet in the same spot, making it easy to manage with a mat if needed. A consistent routine works best for him, with regular trips outside after waking, before work, and before bedtime.

In the evenings, Maxy loves spending quiet time with his family. Sitting on the floor with him for a while, giving him gentle pats and those much-loved head kisses, is the perfect way to end his day. He currently sleeps happily on the floor in one of his cosy beds and appreciates having a small night light to help with his limited vision.

Maxy is looking for a patient, understanding home where he’ll be loved exactly as he is. He will need regular companionship and people who understand that, even after he’s settled, he may occasionally need a little extra reassurance. A secure yard where he can safely wander, sniff, and enjoy a gentle game with his favourite toy would make him very happy, especially if someone joins him outside for a while. He carefully avoids uneven garden beds and prefers predictable, easy-to-navigate spaces.

Maxy may not be the kind of dog who curls up in your lap, but he has an extraordinary way of connecting with those who take the time to understand him. His quiet trust, gentle nature, and unwavering acceptance of the world make him a truly special companion. If you’re looking for a kind-hearted little dog who asks only for patience, love, and a few head rubs in return, Maxy may just be the perfect addition to your family.

Medical Notes:  Maxy is completely blind and appears nearly deaf.
 

All our dogs are desexed, C5 vaccinated with intranasal, microchipped, wormed and flea treated. All necessary vet work such as dentals, surgery, eye treatment is also carried out. We are no longer heartworm testing as we have not had one positive test since we began in 2006. If a dog comes to us on heartworm treatment this is continued.
