NB: We do not rehome interstate or to applicants under 25. It is our policy not to rehome dogs in the Sunraysia area. As rescue groups have transported thousands of homeless dogs from Mildura and Sunraysia pounds over the last decade, we do not intend to send any back there.

Pint-sized Pepe’s person has asked VicDog Rescue to help find his forever home due to some changes in life circumstances that mean he is not getting the companionship he deserves. This mini Daschie attaches strongly to his person(s) and loves to play, pushing his squeaky toys or ball about in an invitation for fun around the house. Pepe is in good health, has basic training and asks to go out to toilet by ringing a bell (if left inside, he is a master of the puppy pad, with perfect aim). Pepe sleeps through the night in his own bed, although he does like to be within view of his human(s).

Pepe lacks confidence and lives with a fair degree of anxiety. He takes some medication to help with this but, like most anxious beings, he is at his best when he has clear routines and a support team that understands him. While Pepe enjoys his twice daily strolls, he is anxious around other dogs and sometimes with people invading his space. He deals with this by barking and lunging (not biting) as a means of creating the space he needs. At home, Pepe can be uncomfortable with guests who get physical before he gets to know them, and it is important he has his own secure space he can retreat to. While Pepe is not particularly barky around the house, he does at times express his worries through high-pitched whining. Pepe is not that experienced with car travel and can be pretty stressed when he is at the vets. While Pepe does not love being without his people, he can be left alone for a few hours from time to time, particularly once he understands the household patterns. Routines and rules help Pepe know what to expect and what is expected of him.

Given Pepe’s worried behaviours, he will do best in a calm adult home, with no other pets and plenty of interaction with his people, as well as clear boundaries and routines. He prefers a couple of short walks a day, preferably in quiet areas with minimal contact with other dogs. Pepe would benefit from further rewards-based training, puzzle feeders and other toys that help him build his confidence.

Pepe is clearly not a beginner owner dog. That said, he is loving and well loved, with much to offer his forever people. If you are an experienced pack leader willing to work with Pepe, we know there will be mutual joy in helping this boy address some of his fears and grow into his forever paws. If you are interested, we are happy to answer any questions you have, and Pepe would love to hear from you.

All our dogs are desexed, C5 vaccinated with intranasal, microchipped, wormed and flea treated. All necessary vet work such as dentals, surgery, eye treatment is also carried out. We are no longer heartworm testing as we have not had one positive test since we began in 2006. If a dog comes to us on heartworm treatment this is continued.
